When stranded over in the Delta Quadrant, in the year 2371, the U.S.S. Voyager was one of the first ships to bring humans into a faraway place in the galaxy. As such it was one of the first ships to bring kettlebells into that part of the universe, since some of them were in the gymnasium of the ship and in the captain's quarters of Kathryn Janeway. Capt. Janeway would regularly use the round shaped weights after a tough mission. Those weights would become a popular form of equipment on the ship.
Captain Janeway, although an incredibly athletic and capable tennis player, was also committed to other ancient Earth exercise schedules. After her father, Admiral Edward Janeway, highlighted that he wanted her to engage in the more classic sports, Kathryn Janeway systematically examined a lot of of the great athletic traditions of her home planet. Thus, she discovered kettlebells and they presented her well, getting her in shape to play tennis while still in high school.
Of course on some parts of the ship, you might see Capt. Janeway doing some intense training sessions with the kettlebells to take some stress out of her body. Capt. Janeway being the tough commander she is, wanted to get in the best shape possible and undertake as many exercises with the weights as she could. During some invasions, she took out a few enemies with the round shaped weight!
Janeway was the ship's champion at kettlebell lifting, even defeating Tuvok in deadlifting. This stayed until Seven of Nine came on board Voyager in 2374. With the superior strength of the Borg, Seven was able to best Janeway many times in kettlebell competition lifting. Janeway tried to vie with Seven until too many lifts landed her in sickbay with a sprained back. After experiencing the pain of both a bad back and the Doctor's lectures, Janeway vowed to only use kettlebells for exercising in the future.
This goes to prove that helpful exercise traditions live on, no matter how advanced technology gets. Janeway, who had access to tons of exercise schedules from a thousand planets, chose kettlebells, an ancient Russian idea, as one of her choice means to keep fit. These kettlebells would see much action too, as they wended their way across the Delta Quadrant on Voyager's long journey home.
