Guide to Wetsuit Repair

By Dexter O'Neal

Wetsuit repair is an excellent technique to lengthen your wetsuits lifespan. In case your wetsuit is just plain old, if it got stiff, pale and hard from all of the sun and Ultra violet rays and also the neoprene is starting to crack there is certainly not much you can to. This type of damage isn't repairable. But in case you have ripped your wetsuit on some rocks or wherever, then this can be fixed with no difficulties and your wetsuit will likely be as good as new.

Wetsuit repairs are fairly low cost and they do an excellent job sealing the hole in your wettie. Nonetheless if the hole is small and you do not wish to lose time and/or cash taking it to repair shop you could also repair it yourself.

What kind of wetsuit hole or tear can you repair at home?

The simplest hole to repair is a hole which is so tiny that you do not need any extra neoprene to cover it up (you may just glue the neoprene back together) and is not much more than an inch (or maybe two) long. Anything bigger I recommend that you just take it to wetsuit repair shop. Also - if the stitches are ripped and the seams are opening up I also recommend you take it to the repair shop.

Tips on how to repair your wetsuit?

Things which you will probably need to repair your wetsuit:

Alcohol (for cleaning), Short-bristle brush (1/2" bristles), Neoprene cement (you can locate it at most surf shops), Something heavy to weight the repaired area

If you buy a particular wetsuit repair kit the majority of these things should be inside. Or you could get a tube of liquid neoprene that is utilised for wetsuit repairs (among other things) and get the rest of the stuff yourself.

Then thoroughly clean the wetsuit as well as the hole of any dirt, wax, salts and so on, Make sure it's dry. Wash it with alcohol and wait until it evaporates. Make use of the brush to place neoprene cement on all wetsuit surfaces that must be sealed back together and wait five minutes, make sure that you keep them apart. Repeat the process and leave for ten minutes. Firmly press the surfaces together and apply even pressure, use a book, a rock or anything... Wait a number of hours (~6 hours). PS: Be cautious not to glue the whole wetsuit together! And wetsuit repair is done.
